NASA image of "Ghost of Mirach"

This NASA handout image received on October 31, 2008 shows the "Ghost of Mirach" galaxy seen in visible light on the left, and in ultraviolet as seen by NASA's Galaxy Evolution Explorer on the right. The fields of view are identical in both pictures, with the Ghost of Miracha galaxy called NGC 404 seen as the whitish spot in the center of the images. Mirach is a red giant star that looms large in visible light. Because NGC 404 is lost in the glare of this star, it was nicknamed the Ghost of Mirach. But when the galaxy is viewed in ultraviolet light, it comes to "life," revealing a never-before-seen ring. This ring, seen in blue in the picture on the right, contains new stars a surprise considering that the galaxy was previously thought to be, essentially, dead. The field of view spans 55,000 light years across. The Ghost of Mirach is located 11 million light-years from Earth. The star Mirach is very close in comparison it is only 200 light-years away and is visible with the naked eye.

Dow Jones Skyrockets up!

Mama said there'd be days like this! A trader on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) reacts to the high closing number on the exchange October 28, 2008 in New York City. The Dow Jones Industrial Average surged 889.35 points, or 10.9%, to 9065.12, and the S&P 500 added 91.59 points, or 10.8%, to 940.51. The Nasdaq jumped 143.57 points, or 9.5%, to 1649.47.

"You got a good day, a good advance, good volume," said Paul Nolte, director of investing at Hinsdale Associates. "I don't know if we've stemmed the tide or not; that's going to require an actual back-to-back gain." Nolte said he will remain cautious until a rally lasts longer than one day.

With a notable late-afternoon "lack of selling pressure, the buyers began to ride in on their horses, and that brought in some additional buyers and short-covering," said Robert Pavlik, chief investment officer at Oaktree Asset Management.

Matt Damon, a keen supporter of Barack Obama, talks at the March for Change on Miami Beach. The Bourne Identity star, sporting greying hair, stood in front of the Stars and Stripes as he spoke to Obama supporters to encourage South Florida's voters and residents to vote early.

"Yes, we can argue and debate our positions passionately, but at this defining moment, all of us must summon the strength and grace to bridge our differences and unite in common effort – black, white, Latino, Asian, Native American; Democrat and Republican, young and old, rich and poor, gay and straight, disabled or not. In this election, we cannot afford the same political games and tactics that are being used to pit us against one another and make us afraid of one another. The stakes are too high ..."

Saudi Arabia's Oil Minister!

Saudi Arabia's Oil Minister Ali AL-Naimi talks to journalists as he arrives at a hotel for an extraordinary OPEC meeting in Vienna October 23, 2008. Oil rose on Thursday ahead of an emergency OPEC meeting expected to consider supply cuts after a 45 percent drop in prices from record highs hit in July.

Oil futures on Wednesday tumbled to 16-month lows under 65 dollars a barrel, mainly on news that demand is slumping in the United States. They recovered on Thursday on bargain-hunting, with Brent North Sea crude up 96 cents at 65.48 dollars a barrel in London. New York's light sweet crude rose 99 cents to 67.74 dollars. But prices are down about 56 percent from a record high of 147.5 dollars in July.

Markets explode north!

Down finishes up 401 (4.68%) Stocks were seeking a direction after the previous session's steep dive, and turned lower after a disappointing report Thursday morning on manufacturing. Wednesday's drop, which took the Dow down 733 points, followed a stream of bad economic news that underscored the likelihood that the country is either in a recession or will be in one — and that the downturn could be severe.

Meanwhile, a weekly snapshot of the job market showed that first-time claims for unemployment benefits declined last week. The Labor Department said new claims fell 16,000 last week to a seasonally adjusted level of 461,000 — below the 475,000 that had been anticipated. Still, total unemployment remains above the level that economists often associate with recession.

Watch Unemployment & the Auto Industry

Yesterday Jim Crammer (www.thestreet.com) had an excellent point about now that the governments having saved the banks should next be focused on addressing the unemployment situation before it spins out of control. First step is to save the Auto Industry and allow possible mergers supported by the US government. GM has about 266,000 employees, ford has 87,700 and Chrysler somewhere around 130,000 - you can't afford to have that many people go out of work overnight, which looks like it might be a real possibility. GM was reported to have about 12-24 months left to live, according to its current 'burn rate' and cash reserves. Briefing.com reports that GM with market cap of $4 billion look likely to be the next one in line for a Government bailout, but at what cost?

UK unemployment rate jumps to 5.7, its highest jump in 17 years in the three months to August.

An LG Display plant is seen in Paju, South Korean; LG Display Co Ltd and two smaller Taiwanese rivals are expected on October 14, 2008 to post sharp falls in profits in the third quarter, hit by weakening demand and falling panel prices. The worlds 3rd largest LCD panel maker, AU Optronics Corp, out of Taiwan has seen a decline in its share price of 46% this year, trading at a valuation of $8 billion US- & with $3 billion cash on hand might be making moves to consolidate the space. Blackberry Storm- New pictures!

The Blackberry Storm is seen in this handout image courtesy of Verizon Wireless on October 8,2008.

Research in Motion Ltd (RIM), maker of the Blackberry, released its first mobile phone with a touch-screen on October 8, its answer to the popular Apple iPhone. The smartphone, the Blackberry Storm, will be available later this year through Verizon Wireless in the United States and Vodafone in Europe, India, Australia and New Zealand, the Canadian company said. The Storm resembles the iPhone but its color touch-screen differs in that it is "clickable" -- The screen depresses slightly when touched like a typewriter key.

RIM president Mike Lazaridis described the touch-screen as a "truly tactile touch interface" which "solves the longstanding problem associated with typing on traditional touch-screens."
